Grindrod Tank Terminals is a division of the multi-faceted Grindrod South Africa. Grindrod Tank Terminals is an independent liquid bulk operator that manages port side liquid bulk storage and transit facilities in the strategic ports of Durban and Cape Town. These facilities have provided crucial services to the market for over 80 years. The combined facilities caters mainly for storage, handling and distribution of molasses and vegetable oil products and is responsible for distributing ± 480 000 tons of product per annum into the South African domestic market using a purpose-designed fleet of vehicles.
Grindrod’s initiatives are inspired by the vision to develop a tank terminal network in strategic locations focusing on Africa and the Middle East. These facilities will target Blue Chip clients within the petroleum, petrochemical, chemical, vegetable oil and feed grade product sectors.
As part of this strategy, Grindrod in 2011 joined forces with Oiltanking Calulo. The resulting joint venture company Oiltanking Grindrod Calulo (Pty) Ltd (”OTGC”), is focused on the development of liquid bulk terminals throughout South Africa.
Oiltanking, as the leading partner in the joint venture, has a 46% shareholding with Calulo Petrochemicals holding a 16% stake, with the remaining 38% shareholding being held by Grindrod. Oiltanking is one of the world’s leading independent storage partners for oils, chemicals, and gases. Oiltanking owns and operates 71 terminals in 22 countries with a total storage capacity of more than 18.3 million cubic meters. Oiltanking therefore brings a wealth of experience in the design, construction and management of bulk liquid terminals.
Calulo Petrochemicals is the Grindrod group’s existing Black Economic Empowerment partner in a number of ventures in South Africa and this transaction represents an extension and further deepening of that relationship. Calulo Petrochemicals is a South African black owned and controlled investment company focusing on the oil, chemicals and logistics sectors.
