Dry bulk logistics, storage and handling facilities
The Grindrod Terminals Richards Bay operation is a culmination of several smaller dry bulk logistics and bulk handling operations. These operations include Kusasa Logistics, Kusasa Bulk Terminals, Navitrade and Sea Munye Port holdings that are now all trading as Grindrod Terminals.
The focus in the Richards Bay area is to provide an efficient and effective import / export service for dry bulk materials. Current major clients include commodities from industries like metals and minerals, phosphates, coal and others.
Facilities consist of four sites situated within 8km from the port of Richards Bay quayside, where all general and bulk cargo is handled. The Kusasa site is currently belt connected to the port’s conveyor system enabling vessel loading at 2000t/h from dedicated storage silos. Current investments include conveyance systems providing belt connectivity between the existing 60,000m3 capacity bulk warehouse on site and the conveyance system of the port of Richards Bay.
The second site (Valley terminal) is situated directly adjacent to the port’s property and is belt connected to the port of Richards Bay’s. This provides an efficient belt connected import facility for dry bulk cargo. Storage capacity is currently being extended and will total 100,000m3 by the end of 2008.
The third site (Navitrade) is a rail siding with rail wagon tippler that is currently utilised for Foskor feed stock deliveries from Palaborwa. Additional rail lines together with a second tippler and inter site conveyance system are currently under construction. This facility will provide efficient rail wagon offloading with cargo discharged directly into the existing warehouse at the Kusasa site or coke beds at the Navitrade site. In conjunction with the Kusasa site, it would provide a very efficient export facility.
The fourth site (Sea Munye), situated 8 km from the quayside, has extensive storage and material handling facilities. Road transport between site and port is utilised during vessel “on and off” loading. Cargo distribution by road or rail is provided for with a rail siding on site.
