The Kingsley Holgate Diaries

End of Expedition Presidential Day – Oranjemund – Namibia

Wednesday, August 19, 2009It came as a great surprise! To think that the successful completion of our humble Boundless Southern Africa Expedition to link 2 oceans, 9 countries, 7 Transfrontier Conservation Areas, more than 30 national parks and game reserves and the communities living in and adjacent to these areas, was now being honoured with a full on Namibian presidential event.

Four countries and a calabash

Sunday, June 28, 2009“Throttle back my friend,” says Garmap navigator Mad Mike Rumble to the boatman as just upstream from the Kazangula Ferry we get to the spot where Zambia, Namibia’s Caprivi, Botswana and Zimbabwe meet. In geography it’s known as a quadripoint, a point on the Earth that touches four distinct regions.

Chobe

Saturday, June 27, 2009We reach Pandamatenga and kiss the tar, the battle of the cattle trail is behind us as are the flooded Makgadikgadi Pans, Baines’ Baobabs, the elephants and wildlife along the pools of the Boteti River, the wide open plains of Nxai Pan and the beautiful Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area that links Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana.

Boteti, Baines’ Baobabs and beyond

Wednesday, June 24, 2009The hippo pools in the Boteti River are full. Our camp is stretched canvas under the camel thorn trees – it’s all part of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Lions roar throughout the night and elephants trudge through camp. There’s two massive crocodiles in a lair and Dave Pusey, the naturalist on the expedition adds cheetah, oryx, kudu, wildebeest, zebra, impala, steenbok, giraffe, bushbuck, black backed jackal, bat eared fox and ostrich to his scribbled notes.

Monday, June 22, 2009Another oddball dispatch from Kingsley Holgate’s Boundless Southern Africa Expedition – a Grindrod supported journey to link 2 oceans, 7 Transfrontier Conservation Areas, 9 countries, more than 30 Nature Reserves and Game Parks and the communities in and adjacent to these areas, and again it’s a story best told in Kingsley’s words…

Northern Tuli Game Reserve

Friday, June 19, 2009Wild Dogs at Mashatu in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, a story best told in the Greybeard’s words: Now I must say we haven’t had much luck lately when it comes to good sightings of Africa’s Painted Dog, so I am more than happy just to see impala, warthog and plentiful signs of elephant.

Svimuwini (Place of Baobabs)

Monday, June 15, 2009The latest expedition dispatch is from the South Eastern corner of Zimbabwe the team has been delighted by the beauty of Gonarezhou National Park and the communities surrounding it. As always, it’s a story best told in Kingsley’s words:

The paradise of Gonarezhou

A DAY IN AFRICA – imagine the scene…

Friday, June 05, 2009Two 4X4 Mega World Landies pull in to a community called Mahenye - where the Save and Runde Rivers meet - adjacent to the Gonarezhou in South Eastern Zimbabwe, all part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area. Kids are playing soccer in an open piece of felt using old compressed plastic bags as a soccer ball. Every kid dreams of being a soccer star… The World Cup is coming to Africa…

International Children’s Day, Reserva Especial De Maputo.

Monday, June 01, 2009We’re just the catalysts a humble expedition to link Communities to Conservation across Africa we are joined from time to time by volunteers who share a common goal of using adventure to improve lives. Today fellow pilgrims of adventure Debbie and Martin Finch add these scribbles to the Boundless Southern Africa Expedition Dispatches…
